The widow of the man who was the inspiration behind Kent's most ambitious development made the journey from her home in America to watch a member of the Royal Family dedicate a sculpture to her husband's memory.
Susannah Rouse, whose late husband Bill masterminded the development of Kings Hill - the 650 acre business park and residential community near West Malling - joined other VIP guests as the Duke of Kent unveiled the artwork, which is in Liberty Square, the new heart of the development with shops, restaurants and community amenities.
Created by artist Rick Kirby, the sculpture is entitled When the sky’s the limit, then the spirits soar and has three stainless steel figures soaring skyward in a spirit of celebration.
Bill Rouse was the co-founder of Liberty Property Trust UK (formerly Rouse Kent), which is developing Kings Hill in conjunction with Kent County Council. His involvement in Kent spanned 15 years and his legacy , Kings Hill, is being heralded as a blue print for mixed use, sustainable development in the UK.
"Bill Rouse loved Kent and it is his vision which has made Kings Hill the successful place it is today," said Andrew Blevins, managing director of Liberty Property Trust UK. "Not only is it the county's flagship business park but it is a great place to live, with two schools, a university campus, golf course, shops, restaurants and plenty of open space for people to enjoy.
"We are delighted that his widow, Susannah, was able to join us, and that so many VIPs from the US and from the UK were able to attend the ceremony."
Senior directors of Liberty Property Trust, including Chairman and CEO Bill Hankowsky, were joined at the event by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, KCC Cabinet Member for Regeneration Alex King, the Mayor and Mayoress of Tonbridge and Malling and business leaders from the county.
